What is s-cut side tape?

S-cut refers to the process of cutting in an S shape. S-cut tapes are a structure on diapers. They are a form of buckle used for fixing, also known as Velcro. It is different from another form of side tapes, PP tapes. PP tapes are made by scraping glue on PP film.

In its structure, the magic hook is used to overlap the frontal tapes, and the ear sticker is fixed to the main body of the diaper with glue. When laminating this material online, there are two locations where hot melt glue needs to be used. The first is the magic hook, which must be glued to the composite layer, and the second is the ear sticker, which must be glued to the diaper with hot melt glue. The composite layer is generally a 2-3 layer structure, and the 3 layers are: non-woven fabric, elastic film, and non-woven fabric.

S-cut tape production process

The online lamination process of S-cut side tape is as follows: First, the magic hook coil is glued, about 20~60µm thick, and after being laminated with the ear tape coil, it is cut in S shape. After cutting, it is divided into two continuous left and right tapes, and 10~25µm of glue is scraped or sprayed on one side of the ear tape, and then cut and divided into two sides, and pasted on the non-woven fabric on both sides of the diaper. Glue is sprayed on the other side of the ear tape, and it is laminated with the surface non-woven fabric that has been glued to complete the online process.

Gluing methods for S-cut ear tapes

1. Spray glue (fiber and spiral): uneven glue spraying, less glue application, relatively weak bonding force;

2. Line glue: uneven glue distribution, higher local strength, too late glue line, easy to penetrate glue to the other side of the nonwoven fabric;

3. Scrape glue: glue coverage area is large, glue application is uniform.

Online lamination process recommendations

• It is recommended to speed up the production line moderately.

• It is recommended to keep the open distance (the distance from the gluing point to the roller pressing point) as short as possible.

• In winter, it is recommended to move the substrate into the workshop in advance and keep the room temperature above 15°C or partially heated.

• It is recommended that the roller pressing force should be large enough.

The first three recommendations are all because the line speeds of the S-cut side tapes and the diaper body are inconsistent when they are matched and bonded. Usually, the line speed of the S-cut is about 1/9 of the line speed of the diaper. The speed of the S-cut is relatively slow, so the open time is long, which is not conducive to the best bonding effect of the glue. Therefore, only by increasing the line speed of the diaper can the speed of the S-cut be increased; plus, the short open distance can be bonded as quickly as possible. The last recommendation is to improve the wetting and bonding of the glue to the substrate.
