In the first half of 2025, China's exports of household paper reached 778,300 t, a 19.06% increase compared to the same period in 2024, with export value amounting to 1.219 billion USD, a 1.77% decrease from 2024. Finished products still dominated the exports, accounting for 69.41% of total exports (69.06% in 2024), with handkerchief paper and facial tissue experiencing the fastest growth at 33.86%.
In the first half of 2025, China's total imports of household paper saw slight growth from the same period in 2024, though import volume remained minimal at just 22,300 t. Original paper still constituted the majority of imports, making up 90.57% of total imports.
Between January and June 2025, China exported 840,400 t of absorbent hygiene products, with export value reaching 2.203 billion USD, marking double-digit growth of 16.01% and 11.00% respectively. Baby diapers continued to lead in export volume, accounting for 42.83% of total exports (359,900 t), growing by 24.07% year-on-year. However, products under the commodity code 48189000 (other household, sanitary or hospital articles made of pulp, paper, etc.) saw a decrease of 4,068.60 t in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, the first decline in recent years. This was attributed to the US imposing additional tariffs, which impacted China's second-quarter exports. Exports to the US, the top destination for these products, dropped by 5,184.61 t in the first half of 2025 from the same period in 2024.
China's imports of absorbent hygiene products remained modest in the first half of 2025, with total import volume at 12,100 t, exerting negligible influence on the domestic consumption market. Sanitary pad imports have remained relatively stable in recent years, with annual import volume hovering around 12,000 t. In 2024, sanitary pad imports decreased by 3,268.58 t compared to 2023. However, in the first half of 2025, sanitary pad imports increased by 1,092.35 t year-on-year. This growth was linked to the "sanitary pad public opinion incident" in November 2024, which led to a rise in imports from Japan. In the first half of 2025, imports of sanitary pads from Japan increased by 1,254.51 t.
In the first half of 2025, China's exports of wet wipes reached 467,300 t, a 17.84% increase from the same period in 2024. Export value amounted to 678 million USD, up 9.52% year-on-year. Cleansing wet wipes were the primary export product, accounting for 83.32% of total exports (389,400 t), with export volume and value growing by 25.11% and 13.87% respectively. In contrast, both export volume and value of disinfectant wet wipes experienced declines of 8.67% and 2.64% respectively.
In the first half of 2025, China's total imports of wet wipes remained minimal, at just 12,186.44 t. Domestic wet wipe production capacity and product variety have been sufficient to meet market demand.
